Good Stewardship

What does the word stewardship mean?

Stewardship means the “careful responsible management of that which is entrusted to our care.”  Unfortunately, the word often gets reduced in churches to mean, “time to write another check.”  From the beginning of time God has entrusted us to be good stewards of all that we have been given.  This includes, our possessions, land, our health, our family, our pets, and the world in which we live.   Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the whole world and all who dwell therein.” This is a reminder that we are not the owners of our possessions, just the stewards.

I grew up hearing my parents say, “Whenever you borrow something, be certain that you return it in the same shape or preferably better.  As God’s stewards, we have been entrusted to give everything we possess the best possible use to build and enrich God’s world. — The Very Rev. April Greenwood
